Yelena’s Hawkeye Coat Had Two Neat Black Widow Easter Eggs
Two Black Widow Easter eggs were included in Yelena Belova’s coat in Hawkeye. Yelena is a standout star in both the movie and show. She has made a lasting impression ever since her Marvel Cinematic Universe debut. Yelena is the adopted sister of Black Widow Natasha Romanoff and is played by Florence Pugh.
Yelena is now a fan favorite because of Pugh’s performances in Black Widow and Hawkeye that proved her charm and ruthlessness. Pugh balances the character’s quirkiness with her fierce resolve in a Hawkeye scene in which Yelena tries to solve problems over a pot full of macaroni cheese. The scene contained some secrets that only the most eagle-eyed viewers could have seen. They both refer to Yelena’s first appearance in the MCU in Black Widow.
Michael Crow, Hawkeye costume design, revealed that Yelena’s iconic macaroni-and-cheese scene hides two Easter eggs reminiscent of Black Widow’s solo movie. Crow claims that the coat was the last one of its kind worldwide. It was also adorned with a few enamel pins. One pin was a spider, a nod to The Black Widow mantle. A pin of a disembodied hand holding a “fingergun” pose has two meanings. Crow expfinger gunne of the items is a type of finger gun. This was the name for Hawkeye’s production company. Florence also liked that because Yelena uses it in Black Widow quite a few times. It was a reference to Yelena that she liked, and it was fun for me to nod to our production company.
Yelena’s scene with Kate is undoubtedly one of the most intense scenes in the series. It’s not surprising that viewers missed the subtle nods after their first viewing. Their inclusion is a testament to the care and attention the creative team paid to Hawkeye and the entire MCU. From Pym Tech arrows to Kingpin’s iconic comic book costume, the show has many references to past stories, characters, and events. Crow would have the same mindset when designing his costumes. It’s not the first time Yelena has had a part in the MCU’s wardrobe. Yelena gifted Black Widow her now-iconic vest in her solo movie.
Scarlett Johansson’s character is dead in the current MCU continuity. This leaves a Black Widow-sized gap. It looks like Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova may be the person to fill it. It seems unlikely that audiences will see the last of Yelena after she stepped into the spotlight in Black Widow and Hawkeye. Even her clothes are helping to tell the MCU story.
