Spider-Man Producer Compares Tom Holland to Maguire & Garfield
Amy Pascal, the producer of the Spider-Man franchise, compares Tom Holland as Peter Parker to previous portrayals by Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire. Spider-Man: No Way Home will release on December 17. This is Holland’s third solo appearance and sixth overall appearance in MCU since Kevin Feige convinced Sony Pictures that the character would be shared with Marvel Studios. Holland made his most recent appearance in Spider-Man’s post-credits scene, which altered the game about the interconnectivity of the MCU and Sony’s Spider-Man universe.
In 2016’s Captain America Civil War, Holland was first introduced as a high school student with spider-like superpowers. However, two other distinguished actors played the iconic web-slinger before Holland. Maguire was a star in Sam Raimi’s critically and commercially successful trilogy from 2002-2007, and Garfield in Marc Webb’s 2012 and 2014 Amazing Spider-Man movies. After the disappointing sequel, Feige persuaded Pascal to allow the superhero to join the MCU. The Spider-Man series of Sony and Marvel is now complete. Multiple villains from previous movies will be returning via the multiverse in No way home.
Fandango interviewed Amy Pascal, long-time Spider-Man producer, to celebrate the sale of tickets for No Way Home. She was also asked how Holland’s portrayal of Peter Parker differed from Garfield and Maguire. She praised all three actors, but she felt Holland” embodied everything Peter Parker was looking for.” Below is Pascal’s complete answer:
Each actor brought their own humanity to the characters, which I believe is a great thing. They are all brilliant, and Tom is unique. He’s the embodiment of everything Peter Parker was searching for. He is funny, charming, and… a great actor and an athlete.
Although all three actors have played the same character, each version is quite different. Maguire’s Peter Parker was sensitive and shy, while Garfield was quick-witted but confident. Holland’s portrayal combines the best elements of past portrayals with Holland’s boyish charm. It is heavily reminiscent of Michael J. Fox’s Marty McFly, Back to The Future.
When Holland’s name is mentioned along with Garfield and Maguire, it’s sure to raise suspicions about their appearance in No Way Home. The rumors and leaks about the possible return of Spider-Man’s past actors in the MCU movie have been a source of concern. Marvel has not confirmed any of this. Assuming Maguire or Garfield return to the threequel, viewers will be able to see the differences and nuances between the three Peter Parker actors in the highly-anticipated Spider-Man movie.
