Valve Cancels Ticket Sales for Dota 2’s The International 2021

Like many other gaming competitions and conventions in 2020 the International Dota 2 annual Esports Championship was delayed indefinitely because of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Due to the delay, Dota 2’s The International competition reached over $34million by August 2020.

Due to the lifting COVID-19 lockdown restrictions in July 2021 Valve announced that Dota 2’s The International tournament would be held in Bucharest in October. Tickets for the live audience went on the market in September. Participants would need to be fully vaccinated, and must wear masks throughout the event.

Only a few weeks ago, tickets for The International went on sale. However, Valve has now canceled all ticket sales. The rise in COVID cases in Romania has resulted in new restrictions in Bucharest. Tournament administrators are no longer able to ensure safety and health for both participants and competitors. The International Dota 2 will still take place on October 7. However, there will not be public attendance. Those who purchased tickets already will receive a refund.

While ticket costs will be refunded, cancellations of the public portion The International Dota 2 championships less that a week before event start may cause inconvenience and even loss of money. Many attendees are already in Romania as a result of comments made on social media. Others have booked hotels, bought plane tickets and taken days off work to make arrangements such as pet sitting or house sitting.

The 2021 event, unlike 2020’s cancellation of The International completely, will still be held and fans can view it online. Details about how and where viewers can tune-in are still not available due to the recent cancellation announcement. It seems likely that Dota 2’s The International 2021 will be streamed live on Valve’s Twitch, YouTube channels or both.

The International Dota 2 Championships will have two stages. The group stage will take place from October 7-10. During this time, the participating esports teams are divided into two groups. They will then play in a round-robin format. The top four teams advance to the main event’s top bracket, while the bottom team is eliminated and the rest of the teams are placed in the lower bracket. The main event will be held from October 12-17, after a one-day break. It is not yet clear if all 10 days of The International will be streamed live or just the main event.
